Artist Syd Carpenter standing in a gallery beside large sculptural works mounted on a yellow wall and displayed on a pedestal.

Syd Carpenter

This site provides a sequence of sculptural works beginning with pieces made in the 1980’s to the present. Each section illustrates my experience as a clay artist and my evolution to mixed media installation and projects on the land.

Much of the work of the last 20 years has focused on the relationship between the land and African American farmers and gardeners. I use the stories of African Americans on the land to explore and represent the experiences and distinct relationships between black people on the land as stewards and keepers.  This connection has been an ongoing theme, informing my art formally and symbolically for more than 20 years.
