Places of Our Own
Places of Our Own refers to the series of sculptures made in response to maps created by Richard Westmacott, a former professor of environmental design at the University of Georgia. His book titled African American Gardens and Yards in the Rural South served as a primary source of content for these early works, providing not only the layout of farms but more importantly, the names of the farmers and gardeners. . In preparing the series, I travelled to farms in Georgia, South Carolina, and the Gullah Islands, observing the distinct attributes of each place, including the shapes of buildings, the pattern of fences, the texture of the soil, the foliage and what was being grown.
