Stem Series
The Stem Series are sculptures that use forms observed in the garden. They focus on twisting, curving, extended shapes of stems and vines. They are augmented with symbolic shapes and textures that also recall my concern with bodily movement and gesture. My brother spent the last 20 years of his life as a quadriplegic. He could not move any part of his body below his chest. My work during this period reflected my attempt to embody movement through the growth patterns of plants combined with the even more urgent wish for him to move.
